Sump Pump Installation Process

Our team of professional plumbers will walk you through all the steps to installing a sump pump before the work begins. Here are the basic steps of installing a sump pump in your basement.

Overview

A sump pump is a system made up of the following items:

  • Access Cover: protects things falling into the tank
  • Sump Tank: water is collected for removal here
  • The Sump Pump: a floater switch turns on the pump when enough water fills it.
  • Foundation Drain & Pipe: Water passes from the soaked ground to the tank via the drainage pipe
  • Exterior Pipe: The water is pumped from the tank inside to the outside of your home.

Step 1: Dig The Pit

Do you have an existing sump pump? If not, then you will need a sump pump pit dug in your basement.

  • Determine the ideal location for a sump pump bit in your basement.
  • Since your home is built on a foundation, a jack hammer will used to break open the concrete to reach the ground.
  • The pit is dug for the sump pump tank to sit in
  • This collects the water pooling in the ground during heavy rainfall.

Step 2: Foundation Drainage

All homes a little different, but here is an idea of what a foundation drain could looks like.

Step 3: The Discharge Pipe

The water pumped from the tank needs to go somewhere, this is one example of how the water is taken away from the house.

The Best Pump for Flooding

Submersible Pumps

  • A Submersible pumps contain the pump and motor in one unit.
  • They sit submerged and closed inside a basin in your basement.
  • They are often quieter, save space, and clog less often.
  • The effects of water submersion effect the lifespan of the sump pump.
  • A submersible sump pump is still the best option for homes with major flooding concerns.

Pedestal Sump Pumps

  • A pedestal sump pump consists of a separate motor and pump.
  • The motor sits on a pedestal above the basin, with a hose running to the basin where the pump is placed.
  • The pump sends water through the hose and out to your designated drain area.
  • It often has a longer lifespan than other sump pumps.
  • Easy access for easier for maintenance.
  • Louder and takes up more space than the submersible pump.

Battery-operated Backup

A battery backup sump pump is a great way to provide some extra security against flood damage. A battery backup with a float switch allows your sump pump to operate even when your power is out during a storm when you need it the most.

Water-powered Backup

  • A water-powered backup clears the water in your basin through increased water pressure.
  • No need to monitor the backup or replace any batteries.
  • Raises your water bill significantly and is a bit controversial.
  • Some cities do not allow them to be installed.
