Is it time to repair or replace your water heater?

Losing hot water doesn’t automatically mean you need a new water heater. Some problems can be repaired, while an older or increasingly unreliable system may make replacement the better investment.

Your water heater may need attention if:

You have little or no hot water
Hot water runs out faster than it used to
Water temperature is inconsistent
You hear unusual noises from the system
You notice water leaking around the unit
Your hot water looks or smells unusual
The system needs increasingly frequent repairs
Your existing water heater is getting older

Donaldson can assess what’s happening, explain whether repair or replacement makes sense and help you choose the right next step for your home.

Which type of water heater is right for your home?

The right water heater depends on more than how much hot water your household uses. Your existing utilities, venting, available space, efficiency goals and budget can all influence which system makes the most sense.

Donaldson installs five types of water heaters and can help you compare them based on your home and how you use hot water.

Conventional water heaters

Traditional tank water heaters heat and store a supply of water so it’s ready when you need it. Natural-draft models can be a straightforward choice for homes with a compatible gas and venting setup.

Power vent water heaters

Power vent water heaters also store hot water in a tank but use a powered fan to move exhaust gases outside. This allows for more flexibility in how the system is vented compared with a conventional natural-draft model.

Tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand rather than keeping a tank of water continuously heated. They take up less space and can be an efficient option, but proper sizing is important to make sure the system can keep up with your household’s hot water needs. Tankless tends to suit homes where space is limited or the household uses a lot of hot water. Keep in mind that a tankless unit won’t shorten the wait for hot water at a tap that’s far from the heater.

Electric water heaters

Electric water heaters use electric heating elements rather than a gas burner. They can be a practical option depending on your home’s existing utilities, available space and hot water requirements.

Heat pump and hybrid water heaters

Heat pump water heaters use heat from the surrounding air to help warm the water in the tank, with electric heating available when needed. They can offer an efficient electric option when the installation location and conditions are suitable.

Buy or rent your water heater

Buying a water heater usually costs less over its lifetime, while renting trades ownership for a predictable monthly payment. We’ll compare the upfront and long-term costs with you so you can choose what suits your home. Ask us whether a rental option applies to your project.

Not sure which option is right for you? We’ll assess your existing system, household hot water needs and installation requirements and recommend water heaters that make sense for your home and budget.

Water heater FAQs

Have more questions? We’ve got the answers.

Little or no hot water, inconsistent temperatures, hot water running out faster than usual, unusual noises, leaks or recurring problems can all mean your water heater needs attention. Donaldson can diagnose the problem and tell you whether repair or replacement makes more sense, with upfront pricing before any work begins. Book water heater repair.

It depends on the age and condition of the water heater, what’s causing the problem, the cost of repair and how reliably it meets your household’s needs. A newer system with a straightforward issue may be worth repairing, while replacement can make more sense for an older unit with recurring or significant problems. In some cases, home insurance may not cover damage caused by an older water heater, so it’s worth asking your insurer. Book an assessment.

Water heater lifespan varies with the type of equipment, installation, usage, water conditions and maintenance. Many traditional tank water heaters last around 10 years, but age alone doesn’t decide when replacement is necessary; condition, performance and repair history matter too. Regular maintenance helps, and our Whole-Home Care plan covers water heaters: compare our Membership Plans.

If you notice water around your water heater, call us promptly. The leak may be coming from a valve, connection or another component, but a leaking tank may need replacing. If a lot of water is escaping, avoid electrical components and limit further damage only if it’s safe. We offer 24/7 emergency service. Call us now and we’ll work to get a technician to your home the same day, subject to availability. See also emergency plumbing.

A traditional water heater heats and stores a supply of hot water in a tank, while a tankless system heats water as it’s needed. Tankless systems take up less space and don’t keep a tank of water hot all day, but they must be sized to keep up with your household’s demand, and the right choice depends on your utilities and installation. Read our tank vs. tankless guide.

In many homes, yes, but switching to tankless isn’t always a direct swap. Changes to gas supply, venting, electrical service or plumbing may be needed, depending on the home and equipment. Donaldson can assess your setup, size a tankless unit to your household’s hot water use and explain what’s involved, with upfront pricing before any work begins. Book a tankless assessment.

Water heater costs vary depending on whether you need a repair or replacement, the type and size of system selected and the work required for installation. Donaldson will assess what’s needed and provide upfront pricing before any work begins. You can also ask us whether a rental option applies to your project. Financing is available on approved credit: see our financing options.
